Exhibition at venue in Berwick will showcase Julia's creative journey
An exhibition that will take place in Berwick will tell the story of how an artist’s creative practice has given her “joy and purpose” whilst navigating chronic illness.
Ebb and Flow by Julia Sweryda is described in the preview material as ‘a tide-driven journey exploring the profound disconnect between a rigid society and a physical body ruled by its own unpredictable tides’.
In addition: ‘Through the sun exposed blues of cyanotypes, marine ecology, and raw text, this creative practice becomes a bold site of somatic reclamation, advocacy and healing’.
The exhibition will be held in The Old Brewery, Tweedmouth, from November 17 to 29.

Explaining how the exhibition came about, Julia said: “I recently completed an artist studio bursary with the Maltings in Berwick Barracks, where I was able to focus on my work and take part in Create Berwick’s Open Studios event.
“With support from Create Berwick, the exhibition is a collection of works made throughout my own creative journey navigating ME/CFS, working mainly with washed up ocean botanicals and found materials from local beaches within reach.
“I spent a long time when I first became ill five years ago feeling isolated, dismissed and unsupported, and have had to adapt and change how I live and work by pacing myself and letting my body, not my mind, take the lead.
“My creative practice has helped me to carve out a new chapter in my life and has given me joy and purpose.
“I hope Ebb and Flow speaks out to support others with invisible illnesses and raises awareness and understanding amongst the wider community.”
