“Durham felt like one big family.” Read about one pupil’s experience at Durham School Sixth Form after being awarded a scholarship to study there for her A-levels.

When Lucy joined Durham School Sixth Form as a Burkitt Scholar, she brought with her ambition, energy and a determination to make the most of every opportunity.

Over two years, she did exactly that.

Lucy studied Geography, Politics and Economics at A-level, achieving AAA before progressing to the University of Glasgow to study Geography. She credits the quality of teaching and the close-knit nature of Durham School with helping her develop both academically and personally.

“Having top-quality teachers with a clear passion for their subjects helped ignite my own enthusiasm,” Lucy said.

“I always had a friendly face around school and was never far away from a great conversation with a member of staff. Durham felt like one big family.”

Experience excellent extra-curricular opportunities

Her contribution extended far beyond the classroom.

Lucy became a passionate advocate for girls’ sport, coaching younger pupils and organising a football festival for more than 100 primary school girls. She was also selected as a representative for Barclays Game Changers, recognising her work to encourage greater participation in women’s football.

Alongside sport, Lucy edited the Durham Eye, winning Shine Media Editor of the Year 2025, established a sustainability club and played cricket for the Girls’ 1st XI.

Looking back, Lucy said: “Coming to Durham benefited me more than I can articulate. With the brilliant teaching, extra-curricular and sporting opportunities, alongside the constant support I received, I don’t think I would have performed so well in my exams.”
