'I'd love' - Dan Burn gets seal of approval from Alan Shearer ahead of historic Newcastle United moment

Blyth-born Dan Burn could make his first start as Newcastle United club captain this weekend when Matthias Jaissle’s side take on Crystal Palace.

Burn inherited the captaincy following Bruno Guimaraes’ departure in the summer and will live out the dreams of thousands of youngsters across Northumberland if and when he leads the team out.

Of course, this is far from the first time that Burn has worn the captain’s armband for his boyhood club, but Sunday at Selhurst Park could be the first time under Jaissle’s management.

Burn has yet to start a match this season after picking up an injury during pre-season but after two appearances as striker from the substitutes bench in recent games, could this weekend finally be the time he returns to the starting team?

Well, who better to ask than another local hero… Alan Shearer.

Speaking to the Northumberland Gazette about the former Blyth Spartans youngster, Shearer said: “I saw Dan in the week and he was in good spirits, despite the last couple of results.

“It was great seeing him get back on the pitch, albeit in a slightly different position but I’d love to have him back and involved in the team this weekend.

“With his leadership qualities and his understanding of how much we need a win, then it wouldn’t surprise me at all if he was back in the starting XI.”

The Magpies have lost back-to-back Premier League games and head to Selhurst Park without a victory there in any of their last five trips and without a win in front of a crowd there in over a decade.
