The Port of Berwick has issued a public safety notice for this weekend.

There is an amber weather warning for Northumberland, with Storm Boelo set to bring gales, covering a 24-hour period from 9pm on Saturday, October 24 to 9pm on Sunday, October 25.

A further yellow weather warning covers the earlier period from 12pm on Saturday.

The public safety notice includes the following: “High winds, rough seas and breaking waves can make Berwick Pier extremely dangerous.

“Waves can sweep across the pier without warning, putting you and others at serious risk.

“When visiting or using Berwick Pier, please be aware of the conditions, never turn your back on the sea, do not put yourself or others in danger and follow all safety signs and instructions.

“Use common sense. Do not take unnecessary risks. Your actions could put not only yourself, but also members of the public and emergency responders at risk if they have to come to your aid.

“If in doubt, stay away from the pier.”
