Milestone for petition supporting landlord who was told to leave Morpeth pub

An online petition set up to support a pub landlord after the company that owns it told her to leave has now been signed by more than 1,000 people.

This development comes as Stonegate Group says it is “in the process of appointing a new tenant” at The Wansbeck in Morpeth.

Last month, landlord Helen claimed on the Facebook page for the pub that she received an email out of the blue from the company checking that she had vacated the establishment.

The post added: “I was told that I had attended a meeting face to face and was served with this notice two weeks ago. I was not.

“They will now no longer respond to any of my calls or emails, leaving me in limbo.”

Helen also had a meeting with her local MP, David Smith, to discuss the situation.

In a recent update, a Stonegate Group spokesperson said: “The Wansbeck is a fantastic pub.

“We are in the process of appointing a new tenant on a long-term tenancy and hope to be able to re-open the pub very soon, as well as provide new investment into this vital community asset.”

The petition started by Jordan Smith – www.change.org/p/reinstate-our-amazing-landlady-and-her-family-at-the-wansbeck – includes the following: “We risk losing not only a business, but a vital community hub. The pub will not be the same without them; their personal touch and dedication have been central to its success.

“Helen and her family have pulled this pub from the ground and have it thriving again with a warm, friendly atmosphere.”

“We urge the pub’s owners to listen to the voice of the community and reconsider their decision.”
