A weather warning for Northumberland has been upgraded with Storm Boelo set to bring gales this weekend.

A yellow weather warning previously issued by the Met Office has been upgraded to amber.

It covers a 24-hour period from 9pm on Saturday, October 24 to 9pm on Sunday, October 25.

A further yellow weather warning covers the earlier period from 12pm on Saturday.

The Met Office says: “Very strong westerly winds associated with Storm Boelo are expected with fairly widespread gusts of 60 to 70 mph and gusts to 80 mph in exposed coastal areas.

“The strongest winds will initially affect western Scotland and far north of Northern Ireland on Saturday evening and then spread eastwards overnight and through Sunday.

“High winds will be accompanied by periods of heavy rain and frequent showers. Whilst high winds are expected across a wider area with a yellow warning in force, there is a higher confidence in impacts and disruption taking place within this amber warning area. The winds will gradually ease from the west through Sunday.”

The Met Office warns of potential power cuts, damage to buildings and trees, flying debris and travel disruption.

It comes on the back of heavy rain and strong winds associated with Storm Austen today (Friday). Weather warnings have been issued by the Met Office for southern England, Wales and parts of Scotland.
