Popular new play café in Bedlington combining coffee and creativity

The idea behind a new family-focused play café in Bedlington is to provide thoughtful play experiences for children and a welcoming environment for parents and carers.

The Willow Bean Play Café, which is located at 8 Market Place in a building dating back to 1851 and officially opened its doors in July, is already becoming a popular destination for local families.

The carefully curated space encourages independent play, exploration and creativity while providing a place where families can relax, connect and build friendships.

Owner Beth Larby said: “I’ve always been passionate about creating spaces where families feel welcomed and supported.

“My occupational therapy background has definitely influenced the design of The Willow Bean. Everything has been created with families in mind, from the way the space feels to providing quieter areas for children who need them.

“We wanted to create an environment that welcomes as many families as possible.

“As soon as I viewed the premises, I loved the feel of the place and could immediately see its potential. The building has such a rich history and has always been somewhere that brings people together, which felt perfectly aligned with what I wanted The Willow Bean to become.”

The business has benefited from support provided through Business Northumberland – the business support service for Northumberland County Council – and the Northumberland Small Business Service (NSBS), receiving assistance with recruitment, interview preparation and DBS guidance, alongside valuable networking opportunities and business start-up advice.

Beth added: “Taking a step back amongst all the chaos and watching children smile, families laugh and people genuinely enjoying their time here has been incredible.

“Seeing families enjoying the space exactly as I’d imagined has made all the hard work worthwhile. We’ve had such positive feedback from parents who appreciate having a calm environment where they can spend quality time with their children and meet other local families.

“I hope The Willow Bean continues to be a place where people feel welcomed, supported and connected.”

The NSBS is funded by the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority through its Rural Growth Programme and Integrated Settlement, with Northumberland County Council acting as the lead delivery partner, supported by Durham County Council, Gateshead Council, Northumberland National Park Authority, Food and Drink North East Limited, and North East Enterprise Agency.

Cllr Richard Wearmouth, cabinet member for growth and regeneration at Northumberland County Council, said: “It’s fantastic to see businesses like The Willow Bean Play Café bringing new life and opportunities to our town centres.

“Not only has Beth created a welcoming and inclusive space for families, but she has also established a community-focused business that reflects the strong entrepreneurial spirit we see across Northumberland.

“We are delighted to have supported The Willow Bean on its journey and wish the team every success as the business continues to grow and flourish.”

The café currently offers three play sessions each weekday at 9.15am, 11.15am and 1.15pm, with each session lasting 90 minutes. Plans are also in place to introduce Saturday opening in the near future.
