Normal Metro service due to resume in North Tyneside tomorrow

Metro services between Wallsend and Tynemouth are due to return to their regular timetable tomorrow – Tuesday November 3 – following the early completion of an urgent bridge repair.

Trains in the area were suspended yesterday to allow teams to safely complete restoration work which began last week.

The bridge in North Shields had been inspected as part of the wider planned line closure between St James and Monkseaton, which finished at the end of the weekend.

Services were initially due to resume on Thursday this week but, thanks to the hard work of several teams over the past several days, the full service can now return earlier than planned.

Customers travelling from the coast to Newcastle city centre today are being advised to travel on the system via Benton.

Services will operate between St James and Wallsend every 20 minutes, until the end of service tonight.

Bus replacement services will stay in place for Tuesday morning, between Tynemouth and Wallsend.

Kevin Storey, operations director at Nexus, said: “We are pleased to say this critical repair work has been completed earlier than planned.

“The issue with the bridge’s stonework was identified during a planned inspection last week and involved rebuilding the bridge arch brick by brick.

"We are investigating what may have caused this damage.”

He added: “We are sorry for the inconvenience this caused to our customers today and they can stay updated through our Pop App and X page on @My_Metro, as well as via www.travelnortheast.uk.

Travel advice is also being shared by platform announcements, display screens and station help points."
