New Deputy Lieutenants appointed for Northumberland

Two new Deputy Lieutenants have been appointed for Northumberland.

The Very Reverend Dean Lee Batson, Dean of Newcastle Cathedral, has served in a number of senior roles within the Church of England and brings a wealth of leadership and community engagement experience to the position.

Joining him is Marc Kelly, of Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, whose career has included service in the Army, Ambulance Service and police.

Marc is also a dedicated community volunteer and currently serves as a forensic paramedic volunteer and RNLI volunteer. He has previously supported local education as a governor at the former Alexandra school in Ashington and Amble Links First School, demonstrating a long-standing commitment to public service.

Deputy Lieutenants are chosen by the Lord-Lieutenant and they receive their commission only when official confirmation is received that His Majesty the King does not ‘disapprove of the appointment’. They must live within the county, or within seven miles of the boundary, and may be appointed for five years in the first instance.

The role will see them join the other deputies in supporting and assisting Dr Caroline Pryer in her position as Lord-Lieutenant, the King’s official representative for the county.

Dr Pryer said: “I’m delighted to welcome the new appointments to our strong team of Deputy Lieutenants who support me in my role.

“Each volunteer Deputy Lieutenant contributes specialist skills and expertise to their community, has an in-depth knowledge of Northumberland and a deep understanding of residents in their area.

“I greatly welcome their contribution and look forward to working with them over the coming years.”
