Union Flag raised during ceremony at Berwick War Memorial
The Union Flag was raised at Berwick War Memorial on Castlegate to mark the completion of a new flagpole project.
The ceremony on Saturday, October 17 brought together residents, veterans, civic representatives and local organisations to honour those currently serving, those who have served, those who never returned and the widows and families left behind.
Leading the flagpole project was Berwick North county councillor Nicole Brooke and it was installed by Northumberland County Council.
The flag was raised by the Mayor of Berwick-upon-Tweed, Cllr Jane Turton, alongside local veteran Mark Dryden, accompanied by piper Lt Col K H Montgomery.

Cllr Brooke said: “We wanted something permanent and meaningful for Berwick in honour of everyone who has made sacrifices for our country, including the families who have given so much.
“Seeing people from across our community come together was incredibly special.”
The Mayor thanked Cllr Brooke for bringing the project to fruition and the county council for installing the flagpole.
She added: “This memorial is a place where we remember those who gave their lives in service to our country and reflect on the sacrifices made by them and their families.
“The new flagpole is a fitting addition to this important place in our town."
Those attending included representatives of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, Berwick Fusiliers Club, King’s Own Scottish Borderers, Coldstream Guards, Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service, Berwick Civic Society, Berwick Chamber of Trade and Commerce, Berwick Rotary, Berwick-upon-Tweed Town Council and the civic party, alongside Cllr Isabel Hunter.
The town council has agreed to look after the new flagpole.
