Cricket legend praises fish and chip restaurant on visit to the North East
Cricket legend Sir Geoffrey Boycott has praised the success of a North East fish and chip restaurant.
The former England opening batsman spent time meeting customers at Trenchers in Whitley Bay, signing autographs and posing for photographs during his visit.

Sir Geoffrey was already familiar with the Trenchers name through his family’s longstanding association with its restaurant in Whitby, which they have visited many times over the years.
And he was impressed by the business’s continued growth, with the Trenchers brand now extending beyond the North East to Windermere.
Sir Geoffrey said: “It was a lovely visit. It’s great to see a local business such as Trenchers thriving, particularly when its brand now takes in Windermere too.
“In these challenging times for everyone, to see a business expanding and picking up some of the biggest national awards means you must be doing something very well.”
His visit provided an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of a growing hospitality business while enjoying the chance to meet customers and help a local charity.
General manager Mo Kamal said: “It was lovely to see Sir Geoffrey. He spent time signing autographs and having photographs taken with our customers, and he also signed bats and England shirts for a local charity organisations.
“He told us he loved his time with us and that he would be back, which was fantastic to hear.
“He was already familiar with Trenchers in Whitby because his family have visited there many times over the years, so it was great to welcome him to Whitley Bay as well.”
Sir Geoffrey was in the North East for a show at Cullercoats Crescent Club.
