Speed limit to be reduced following series of crashes on busy road in Northumberland
A reduced speed limit is to be introduced at an accident blackspot in Northumberland.
Plans for a 50mph speed limit on the A1068 at Fisher Lane, near Cramlington, have been approved by Northumberland County Council.

Concerns about road safety matters between the A192 and A1172 had been raised with the local authority.
A report by council officers explains that the national speed limit currently applied on the 2km stretch of road.
Proposals for a 50mph speed limit have been developed following a road safety study.
“A section of the A1068 Fisher Lane road which links with two of Cramlington’s busiest A-roads in the A192 and A1172 has been identified as a high risk site requiring intervention measures following a road safety study which reviewed the recent road safety record at this location,” states the report.
“The national speed limit is in operation throughout this route and collision data demonstrates that several serious and slight collisions have occurred at the junction with Nelson Way.
“New traffic calming features will incorporate new speed limit signs to inform motorists of the new restrictions and improved road markings at the A1068 Fisher Lane junction with Nelson Way, whilst additional street lighting will be installed and vegetation will be cleared in areas required to improve visibility.
“It is anticipated that the speed limit reduction measures will promote slower traffic speeds on the A1068 Fisher Lane and therefore improve road safety by reducing the number of collisions experienced on one of Cramlington’s busiest traffic routes.”
The scheme is supported by the local county councillor and Cramlington Town Council.
It is to be funded through the 2026-29 Local Transport Plan (LTP) Programme.
The process will now be followed for making the permanent Traffic Regulation Order.
