Heritage Open Days activities and new exhibition opening at Berwick Barracks
Berwick Barracks is currently undergoing a major renovation, but it is still opening its gates to the public for Heritage Open Days.
A packed weekend of free activities will take place on Saturday, September 19 and Sunday, September 20 from 11am to 4pm.
It includes a new exhibition, stonemasonry demonstrations, printmaking, coin-striking, a community tablecloth project, re-enactors and dog portraits.
The Resonances: Things Unseen from the Barracks exhibition, curated by Susan Higgins, will open at The Storehouse.

Drawing on museum artefacts and archives, it looks at the marks left by the people who have lived and worked in the Barracks over the centuries and considers the intertwined relationship between Berwick, the Barracks, and The King’s Own Scottish Borderers (KOSB).
Visitors can join the site team behind the scenes to see the stonemasonry techniques being used as this historic building is transformed into new museum and cultural spaces for the town.
There is also the chance to get inspired by the everyday built heritage of Berwick with artist Georgie Fay, creating images on Tetra Pak surfaces before printing them onto artist-grade paper on a real printing press in an inclusive workshop suitable for all.
People can have a go at striking their own medieval Northumbrian coin with Bjarni Thorvaldsson, the ‘Science Viking’, and inspired by the KOSB’s Mons Tablecloth, artist Cath Campbell invites visitors to sew their signature onto a community co-created artwork.
In addition, dog owners can bring their pets along and get a ‘Pawtrait’ at the Barracks, look out for special appearances from war re-enactors and grab refreshments from the on-site coffee truck.
