Man giving back to Daft as a Brush charity that helped him by organising a fundraising event
A Blyth resident is raising funds for the charity that supported him through an event that will include songs from the shows and modern music.
Steven Fawell is among those to be transported by Daft as a Brush Cancer Patient Care to and from hospital for treatment, free of charge.
Before he was a teacher, he was an actor for 23 years. Both Steven and friend Joe Shovelton, who is still in the business, are performing during the charity fundraiser and awareness night at the Breeze Lounge in Blyth on Saturday, November 21, from 7pm to 11pm.
Steven said: “I have recently completed cancer treatment and this charitable ambulance service was worth its weight in gold.

“I don’t know what we would have done without this during the six weeks I had to journey to the Freeman Hospital every day, Monday to Friday.
“The compassion, integrity and professionalism of all the drivers and companions made a challenging time all that more bearable.
“Research has also shown that patients respond to treatment more successfully by using this service because it takes away from families the stress and anxiety of driving and parking etc.
“It is run entirely by volunteers and the charity relies completely on donations to function.
“Rather than just give a donation myself, I felt I wanted to give something back as a thank you by way of holding a musical event at a local bar and restaurant, thus promoting a local business and this outstanding charity.
“I only found out about this service by chance. The hospital did not mention it and speaking to other patients, they didn’t know about it either in the early stages of their treatment. Therefore, I believe we need to raise more awareness of this impeccable service and charity.”
Tickets are priced at £10 per person. Food is included in the ticket price – vegetarian option available.

Founded by Brian Burnie, Daft as a Brush Cancer Patient Care was born out of a simple but powerful idea that no-one battling cancer should have to worry about how they will get to treatment.
