A first-half brace from the in-form Adam Lennox fired the Highwaymen into a commanding lead at the interval, before Aaron Chung extinguished any simmering hopes of a Grimsby fight-back with a late third after the visitors had halved the deficit just before the hour-mark.

The result leaves Morpeth third in the NPL East table, with 33 points from their opening 17 matches, and speaking after the final whistle, manager Craig Lynch expressed his delight at another hard-fought win. He said: “I think we've been brilliant. That's two months unbeaten, 14 unbeaten, I think. It's incredible, incredible. The lads have been brilliant.

“We've got 10 missing. We had lads coming on... We came up early and watched the under-17s play the under-18s this morning, and we had three of the lads that have played in that stay behind and played for us.

“But I thought we were brilliant first half, 2-0 up. Second half we came out and we were electric. It should have been four or five. We were surprised they made four changes... So that kind of threw a spanner in the works, but it didn't affect the lads. We were magnificent, and like I said, it could have been four or five second half. It should have been, but it wasn't.

“Fair play to them [Grimsby], they kept going, got back to 2-1, it gets nervy but we still looked assured and then Chungy's come on and killed the game off. So I was delighted and it's the least the lads deserve. Like I said last week, everyone at the club, fantastic.”

On his side’s exceptional home form, Lynch added: “We've had a couple of years - even the year where we got our best ever finish - our away form was better than our home form. Last season, our home form probably has kept us hanging on to the very end, but it should be a hard place to come.”

Turning his attention to Lennox’s pivotal double, the Morpeth boss continued: “Two great finishes again. I mean, Chungy's killed the game off today, but Lennox scored the goals that have won the games - and he's played a little bit of a different position.

“He told us before signing him he could play there, luckily, because that's where we had to put him and it just gets him some good positions.”
