Range of items to go in time capsule that will be buried under the floors of Berwick Barracks

With the Berwick Barracks’ floors being lifted as part of regeneration work, the Living Barracks project team is taking advantage of a rare chance to leave something behind for future generations.

Filled with plans of the new museums and galleries at Berwick Barracks, along with contributions from artists and local children, the capsule is fittingly being buried under the floor of the new archive search rooms.

The capsule, made by Fabvent, will be buried by the Lord-Lieutenant of Northumberland, Dr Caroline Pryer, this Friday (November 6) and will not be opened until 2056.

Linda Bankier, senior archivist at Berwick Record Office, said: “Berwick will change a lot in the next 30 years.

“This time capsule is our chance to capture the Living Barracks Project in 2026 and provide a tangible window into the past for future generations when it is opened.”

Items will include photographs and plans of the Barracks’ construction, objects and flyers from Berwick Shines projects, a pair of conservation gloves (a nod to the work of caring for the collections) and a bottle of whisky (a nod to the King’s Own Scottish Borderers officers) to be enjoyed by whoever opens the capsule in 2056.

The Living Barracks project team has also revealed that the capsule will also contain a copy of this week’s Berwick Advertiser (publication date Thursday, November 5, 2026) adding: “If you’re reading this in 2056, we’re glad you’ve found it!”

The project is a collaboration between Berwick Barracks Heritage Trust, English Heritage, The King’s Own Scottish Borderers Association, The Maltings (Berwick) Trust and Northumberland County Council.
