Direct Pets celebrates opening of new dog grooming salon in Berwick

Independent pet retailer Direct Pets has officially opened its new dog grooming salon in Berwick.

This marking another exciting chapter for the family-owned business, which also has a store in Gateshead, and its continued investment in local communities.

The new salon, located within the Direct Pets store at the Ramparts Business Park, officially opened on October 20 – with county councillor for Berwick North Nicole Brooke joining the team to cut the ribbon and celebrate the occasion.

The opening represents a further expansion of the retailer’s services, providing local dog owners with access to professional grooming alongside the store’s existing range of pet food, accessories and supplies.

Leading the new salon is experienced dog groomer Dawn Wallace, who brings 11 years of industry experience to the role.

Working alongside Dawn is a growing grooming team, with a focus on providing a welcoming, comfortable environment where dogs receive individual care and attention.

The investment has also created new employment and training opportunities in Berwick, reflecting Direct Pets’ commitment to supporting the local economy and developing skills within the community.

This was highlighted by founder Tom Woodcock when he spoke at the official opening.

He said: “We’re proud to be a family-owned business, to be investing in Berwick, our local town, and to be creating jobs and new business around town.”

He also emphasised that the salon is about much more than providing haircuts – with the team committed to giving owners confidence and ensuring their dogs feel safe, comfortable and well cared for.

The opening follows an exciting year for Direct Pets, which was recently recognised as North East Pet Shop of the Year 2026, alongside receiving an Extra Mile Award.

With the salon now welcoming its first customers, the business hopes to become a trusted destination for professional dog grooming in Berwick and the surrounding communities.

Meanwhile, after Pets at Home announced in the summer that its store in Berwick would permanently close its doors later in the year, the store off Prince Edward Road has now closed for good.
