A Cramlington romance fraud victim has appeared in a true-crime documentary exploring the dangers of modern dating.

In 2024, Melanie Graham was led to believe she had married a probation officer named Ray Owens in Dubai.

It was only later that Melanie discovered the man had been using a fake identity and was actually one of the UK’s most notorious romance fraudsters, who had conned countless women.

After coming to terms with what happened, Melanie released her memoir, Chosen, to challenge the misconceptions around victims of romance fraud and began campaigning for changes within the criminal justice system.

Now, she has appeared in Red Flag – a true crime documentary series where relationship expert Paul C. Brunson meets survivors of toxic relationships.

During the episode, Melanie meets with Paul and the pair discuss the relationship, looking out for the warning signs.

Melanie said: “The team really went above and beyond to make me feel comfortable. Paul is basically exactly the way he seems on TV.

"I think even he found it hard to spot the red flags until it sunk in what was actually going on.”

During filming, Melanie took Paul to places which were significant to the relationship, including Crusoe’s in Tynemouth and The Keel Row pub in Newcastle.

“He was absolutely blown away by Tynemouth,” Melanie added. “I think it was an experience for him to come up here. He said he had a great two days and we still keep in touch.”

On why Melanie chose to share her story in this way, she added: “The shame shouldn't be on the victim.

"A lot of other victims have actually reached out to me and I always try to explain that it’s not them in the wrong, it’s the criminal.

"Meeting other survivors has become one of the most meaningful parts of my journey.

"It’s really been quite powerful and it’s out there now so I hope it does what it’s supposed to. If one person recognises a red flag before it’s too, late then it was worth doing this episode.”

Melanie appeared in episode eight of the series which is available to stream on U and Channel 4. It will also air live on October 27.

Her memoir, Chosen, can also be purchased on Amazon or from Bridge Street Books in Amble.
