Don’t kill your dog with kindness

Are you killing your dog with kindness/love. Does food equal love to you? Do you know that you are shortening the life of the dog who means the world to you?

If you look down at your dog from above can you see a defined waist, you should be able to, or is it just straight down like a stuffed sausage?

Do you know what the typical ailments for your dogs breed are, for example Labradors and German shepherds suffer with arthritis, back, leg and hip issues. Being overweight while younger puts extra strain on their joints and so they will develop arthritis younger. If the dog is older then your dog is going to suffer through being overweight which will then involve costly pain medication from the vets.

Flat-faced breeds, such as pugs, Frenchies, etc, nearly always have breathing difficulties and again having too much weight to carry will not only cause them to overheat and become out of breath easily but will shorten their life expectancy.

Dogs are very good at masking pain, just imagine having aching joints all the time because you are lugging around all that extra weight as well as the strain it puts on all the interior organs.

If you are training, use a portion of the dogs kibble as training treats instead of extra treats. Human food is often very high in salt which is dangerous for the dog and things such as dental sticks actually do nothing to clean a dogs teeth and just add empty calories. Natural treats such as lamb braids and pizzle sticks are better for their teeth.

Fruit and veg are better than manufactured treats, check on the internet which are safe for your dog, they give the dog vitamins and don't add empty calories.

Excuses such as: I give them what the packet recommends; it's since they have been neutered; they haven't had as much exercis ... are not reasons for your dog to be overweight. It is very simple, just reduce their food allowance. It isn't mean not to ply them with food, it's kindness.

People often say ‘well he’s old so he can have what he likes’ ... so you would prefer your dog to be in pain so that you feel better? It is better to have them on the slimmer side when they are older.

Next time your vet says your dog is fat don't take the hump, listen, they are trying to ensure your dog has a long and happy life. Stop overfeeding your dog to make you feel better, cut down the food, cut out the treats and help your dog live a longer life.

Rescue Dog of the Week

Captain is a three-year-old Saluki x. He is neutered and fully vaccinated. Captain has definitely had some rough treatment in the past as he is very fearful and wary of meeting new people, particularly men. Captain needs a calm and quiet adult only home, without visiting children. He will need a home where he can learn to trust you at his own pace and isn't pushed before he has established that trust.

Once Captain does trust you he is super loving and full of life and mischief. He is good with other dogs and will enjoy long walks. He has a very different personality to lazy greyhounds and loves to play ball and have fun.

If you think you can provide the calm and patient but active home that Captain requires, then please contact us at [email protected]
