It was reported that, for reasons yet to be established, a grey Range Rover Sport had collided with a pedestrian near an entrance gate to a field.

Emergency services attended and the pedestrian – a woman aged in her 60s – was found to have sustained life-threatening injuries.

She was taken to hospital for treatment of her injuries but sadly passed away later that day.

Her next of kin have been informed and are being supported by officers.

The driver of the Range Rover Sport remained at the scene and is assisting with enquiries.

Officers from Northumbria Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit have launched a full investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the

collision – and are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

They are particularly keen to hear from anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage of the moments leading up to the collision.

Sergeant Greg Huntley, of Northumbria Police, said: “Our thoughts are firmly with the family and loved ones of the woman who has sadly died in this tragic collision.

“We will continue to offer them all the support they need and would ask that their privacy is respected at this time.”

Sgt Huntley added: “We are appealing for further information and for anyone with dashcam footage of the vehicles involved to come forward.

“If you were travelling on Mare Close or in the area of the A190 Avenue Road around the time of this collision, any information you are able to provide could prove crucial to our enquiries.”

Anyone with information or footage should get in touch by sending Northumbria Police a direct message on social media, or by using live chat and report forms on the Force’s website.

Those unable to make contact in these ways can call 101.
