Young karate champion celebrates award success as Cramlington club marks five years

Karate kid Finlay Stubbs is celebrating another major milestone after winning at the Love Cramlington Awards.

The eight-year-old has represented Kokoro Shotokan Karate Club at regional and national competitions and established himself as one of the country’s most promising young athletes.

A British champion, Finlay has already reached 2nd Kyu, brown and white belt, reflecting his commitment and determination, as well as successfully competing against students considerably older than him.

The Youth Sports Award was presented by Cramlington’s Town Mayor, Councillor Helen Morris, and sponsored by Newcastle Building Society.

Finlay’s success comes as Kokoro Karate Club celebrates the fifth anniversary of its Cramlington dojo.

When the original dojo closed its doors, the Karate Union of Great Britain contacted Sensei Gemma Gibson to re-establish the club, due to the success of Kokoro Blyth.

Since opening its doors, on November 2, 2021, the dojo has grown into a welcoming community where children, adults and families can develop their karate skills, build confidence and form lasting friendships.

Sensei Gemma Gibson, 4th Dan said “Finlay’s award and the dojo’s fifth anniversary represent two important celebrations of what Kokoro has achieved. Finlay’s success reflects his talent and determination, but also all the hard work he puts in.

"The Cramlington club’s first five years have been filled with milestones that demonstrate the power of commitment, encouragement and a strong community.

"And for Finlay, winning the Youth Sports Award is another achievement to add to an already impressive karate journey, which I’m sure there will be more success in the years ahead.”
