Northumberland woman raises thousands in memory of best friend lost to cancer

A Lesbury woman has raised thousands for charity in honour of her best friend who passed away after a battle with cancer.

The day before she turned 18-years-old, Ellen Hardisty was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer and sadly passed away on May 23, 2024.

As a way to keep Ellen’s memory alive, her life-long best friend Francesca Inglis has taken on some incredible challenges for charity.

Coinciding with what would have been Ellen’s 21st birthday week, Francesca walked 40-miles over September 5 – 6 as part of the Northumberland Coast Macmillan Mighty Hike.

"I won't let Ellen's death be for nothing, she should be here celebrating her 21st year,” Francesca said. “So this is for you, Ellen.”

This is the third year Francesca has done the hike in Ellen’s memory, but it is the first time she has tackled both the half-marathon and full marathon in the same weekend.

Alongside her mum, her cousin and a close family friend, the team of four have managed to raise an impressive total of £4,200 for Macmillan.

“Since you passed away I have raised £9,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support and I have walked 80 miles in Mighty Hikes,” Francesca added.

“I did have a lot of down days, but because of your inspirational determination to not let cancer stop you, I carry on for you.

"You will forever be the reason I do what I do. Every painful step was worth it to keep your memory alive."

Donations can still be made to Francesca’s fundraiser here.
