Borders theatre group stages Christmas panto for people with additional needs

A Borders theatre group for people with additional support needs is taking the region by storm.

Now in its fourth year, the ‘All Sorts’ group meet annually to devise, create, develop and perform an original production.

What began with a cast of only eight performing to family and friends in a small room at Abbey Row, Kelso, has grown into a vibrant company with the confidence to take centre stage.

This Christmas All Sorts presents its very own pantomime, The Wizard of Claus in Sparkle Land, at Coldstream Primary School on December 11 and 12.

Committed to breaking down barriers that can prevent people from accessing the arts, the group welcomes anyone aged 15 or over with an additional support need.

“I love working with All Sorts,” says director Karen Anderson.

“We respect each person’s individual needs while focusing on their talent and creativity. This adventure has been a learning curve for all of us, encouraging us to find new ways of learning and performing. It has challenged us to think outside the box and bring a fresh, dynamic energy to every show.”

For many young people and adults in the Scottish Borders living with disabilities, anxiety or neurodivergence, All Sorts has provided an opportunity to find their voice.

Members describe the group as a place to meet new people, make friends and have fun without pressure to do anything they do not want to do.

Supported by local charities, Interest Link and Border Youth Theatre, the group’s achievements were recognised last year when they received the Youth Award for Performance of the Year.
