Winter in the UK doesn’t mean hibernation, on the contrary, it can be the perfect time to explore the country’s most iconic landmarks.

Crisp air, clearer skies, and fewer crowds give travellers a fresh perspective on familiar sights, from ancient ruins to stunning coastal views. Whether you’re chasing winter sunshine or seeking the ultimate Instagram backdrop, some locations shine brighter than others during the colder months.

A recent study by Braw Scottish Tours analysed 40 of the UK’s most famous landmarks to determine the top winter sightseeing spots. Using metrics including winter sunshine hours, rainfall, visitor ratings, Google search interest, and Instagram popularity, the study revealed where travellers are most likely to enjoy a memorable winter visit.

Bamburgh Castle ranks 13th overall, with a total score of 43.84. Winter sunshine hours are moderate at 160.62, and rainfall is relatively low at 44.83 inches, providing favorable conditions for exploring the castle grounds and coastline. Visitors rate it highly at 4.6 out of 5, and its Instagram popularity of 84,600 posts underscores its appeal among photographers and social media users seeking dramatic coastal backdrops. Google search interest is strong, with 606,060 searches, showing that the castle continues to attract attention from travellers planning winter visits.

Bamburgh is part of a cluster of top Northumberland winter destinations, including Alnwick Castle (22nd overall) and Lindisfarne Castle (27th), as well as coastal landmarks like Dunstanburgh Castle Coastline (24th). Together, these sites make Northumberland an ideal winter region for history enthusiasts, walkers, and photographers seeking both castles and natural landscapes.

Stonehenge tops the list as the UK’s best winter sunset spot, followed by Land’s End and London’s Sky Garden. Durdle Door and Tintagel Castle complete the top five, while Arthur’s Seat, Kynance Cove, and Holywell Bay rank sixth to eighth. Edinburgh Castle Esplanade and Primrose Hill round out the top 10.
