New pie and mash shop in Blyth celebrates busy launch weekend

A brand-new pie and mash shop in Blyth has celebrated a successful launch with queues out the door.

On Saturday, October 31, customers flocked to try Georgy Porgy’s Pie and Mash as the cafe officially opened on Bowes Street.

Owner Karen Geeves, who has had the idea for the business for a number of years, explained how the launch went better than she ever could have hoped.

“It was absolutely fantastic, there was such a buzz,” she said. “We were really, really busy.

"By 11, people were having full pie and mash dinners. I was so glad it because you get this fear of standing behind the counter and your arms folded.

“It's quite strange because I've been wanting to do this idea for absolutely years on end."

The shop promises proper home comfort food that cuts no corners – serving up traditional, deep filled pies made here in the North East with buttery mash and ‘Northern gravy’.

Already proving particularly popular among customers are the mince and onion and chicken balti pies.

“When I was setting up Georgie Porgy's here in Blyth, I made a promise to myself that I wasn't going to do any cheap pies just to make mass profit,” Karen added.

“I spent absolutely ages looking for the perfect bakers and eventually settled a premium bakery in Newcastle who have been making pies for over 70 years.”

For those wanting to give it a try – opening days are Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 11am till 3pm.
