Back-to-back cup wins for Berwick Rangers after victory over Hibs B in the KDM Evolution Trophy

Berwick Rangers beat Hibs B 1-0 in the KDM Evolution Trophy at MKM Shielfield Park on Tuesday night.

A fine strike from outside the box by Jamie Pyper sealed the three points and moved the Wee Gers up to 22nd in the league phase table – right on the qualification bubble.

It came on the counter attack when Josh O’Connor pounced on a loose ball to burst down the right. He picked out Pyper around 25 yards from goal and his first-time shot looped into the top left corner.

Hibs created a handful of chances as they pressed for an equaliser but a combination of good goalkeeping, last-ditch defending and wasteful finishing ensured Berwick came away with the win.

It is back-to-back wins for Berwick after a hard-fought 3-2 win at Greenock Juniors in the South Challenge Cup on Saturday thanks to first half goals from Ben McCrystal, Michael Mbewe and Alex Harris.

Berwick created numerous opportunities in the first quarter of an hour before McCrystal turned in Mbewe’s cross at the near post.

However, the hosts were gifted an equaliser shortly after when Mackay’s short back pass let in Leroy Smith who rounded the keeper and tapped home.

Despite that, Berwick retook the lead just after the 30-minute mark when substitute O’Connor drove a cross onto the foot of Mbewe to slot home at the back post.

Berwick looked to have taken the game beyond Greenock just before half time when Alex Harris’ delivery found its way into the back of the net.

The second half saw the hosts up their intensity and, with eight minutes to go, Darren Boyle headed home Craig Brown’s corner to set up a grandstand finish.

Greenock substitute Innes Lambert was sent off in stoppage time for a challenge on Grant Leitch.

Berwick return to Lowland League East action this Saturday as they take on Tranent at home.
