Rothbury residents invited to help reshape the future of their high street by attending special event

Residents are invited to see and comment on proposals to revitalise Rothbury at a free drop-in exhibition.

The event on Friday, November 6 is being run by the local regeneration group with Northumberland County Council’s economic and regeneration team.

Visitors can see how money from the Borderlands fund could be used to improve the town. They can also chat to councillors, residents and council officers, and contribute suggestions and comments.

The exhibition follows the launch of plans for the formation of the Rothbury Regeneration Trust, formed by local enthusiasts working with the parish council.

The Trust aims to acquire at least one of the high street’s empty landmark buildings for community use. The ideas put forward so far include a heritage centre exploring the area’s history, nature and changing farming practises.

Also suggested are a banking hub, business centre, pop-up shops and a cafe.

Cathy Jacob of the Rothbury Regeneration and Economy working group said: “We hope to follow in the footsteps of other successful community development organisations in Northumberland, such as those in Wooler, Amble and Haltwhistle.

“Bringing buildings that have not attracted commercial buyers into community ownership will enable Rothbury to revitalise its high street, making it more attractive to new businesses and visitors.

“We are keen to hear everyone’s ideas and invite people join in the work of the group.”

Two banks, a pub, several shops popular with visitors, and some cafes, have closed in the town in recent years.

Rothbury has fared better than many, with new cafes and shops thriving, but its conservation area and Grade II listed buildings in need of repair can deter new owners.

Those involved with the trust also hope to work closely with The Wildlife Trusts and Northumberland Wildlife Trust, which are in the final stages of purchasing the Rothbury Estate.

John Devlin, chair of Rothbury Parish Council, said: “We are looking forward to welcoming more walkers, cyclists, bird watchers and nature lovers to the area.

“We hope they will want to find out about both the history and nature of this unique Northumberland location and bring renewed vitality to the town.”

The event will take place at the Rothbury United Reformed Church between 2pm and 7pm. Everyone is welcome and refreshments will be provided.
