Rothbury and Masons progress in Minor Cup

It was NFA Minor Cup day for local side’s at the weekend with Rothbury and Amble Masons the only teams to make progress.

Rothbury beat Wooler 4-2 away from home, whilst Amble also triumphed on the road, 3-1 at Lowick.

Other local sides in action included Alnwick Town U23s, beaten 7-1 at home by Ellington; Amble St Cuthbert, who went down 4-1 away to Newcastle Chemfica Amateurs; and Red Row, who lost 3-1 away to Whitley Bay SC.

North Sunderland’s home game against West Jesmond was postponed, as was Alnwick Development’s match away to Eden Blyth.

Rothbury had strike pair Gareth McCann and James Loughborough to thank for their progression at Wooler, as they both scored twice.

They each netted in the first half to lead 2-0 at the break, with the home side reduced to ten men following the sending off of Guthrie.

Rothbury then went 0-3 up before also having a player sent off. A fourth goal put the game beyond Wooler, but they responded well by scoring two late goals through Connor Cowens.

Amble Masons came from behind to win 3-1 away at Lowick

The home side made a decent start and went 1-0 up. An Amble penalty was then saved by Archie Little, but the visitors drew level before the break.

In the second half Amble scored again, but Lowick then had a player sent off for two yellow cards within five minutes of each other and the Combination side scored again to complete their victory.

In the Northern Alliance Premier Division, Alnwick Town went down 0-2 at home to Gateshead Rutherford.

The defeat ended the team’s five match unbeaten run with a goal coming in each half, the second when Alnwick were pressing for a late equaliser.

After nine games played, the defeat leaves Alnwick in 12th place in the Premier Division table with seven points from two wins and one draw.

On Saturday (October 12), Alnwick are back in cup action when they are away to Blyth Town in the Senior Benevolent Bowl.

Rothbury are home to Whitley Bay SC in Division 1, and in the Development Division it’s Gosforth Bohemiens Reserves v Wooler; Morpeth FC v Lowick and Whitley Bay SC A v North Sunderland.
