Northumberland County Council is reassuring parents and carers that schools will provide meal options for all children in Reception, Key Stage 1 or those who meet the benefits-related free school meal eligibility criteria.

They will also be provided to those eligible if they are self-isolating, have had symptoms or a positive test result themselves, are a close contact of someone who has coronavirus or are not attending school as a result of local lockdown arrangements.

Parents and carers are encouraged to speak with their school to discuss arrangements for their child dependent on their need.

Cllr Guy Renner-Thompson, the council’s cabinet member for children’s services, said: “For many, school meals play an important part of their day and it is important that they continue, even more so during this time.

“The council will continue, as always, to support schools with their meal offer, and will help them work with their providers to ensure children who are having to stay at home receive a meal.”

The authority’s executive director for children’s services, Cath McEvoy-Carr, added: “Some families rely on their child receiving a free school meal, so it is important that this a continued offer for them.
