Derelict site projects provide 16 new homes in North Tyneside
Sixteen new council homes have been built on two derelict sites in North Tyneside to provide affordable housing for local people.
North Tyneside Council has delivered eight houses at Rosehill View in Howdon, on the former Rosehill Social Club site, and eight flats at the former Parkside House site on Elton Street East in Wallsend.

The schemes have been supported by funding from North East Mayor Kim McGuinness’ Brownfield Housing Fund and will provide 16 new homes at social rents for households from the borough’s housing register.
All the homes are fully electric, with energy-efficient air source heat pumps providing central heating and each has an electric vehicle charging point.
At Rosehill View, the former social club had stood empty for years, becoming derelict and attracting vandalism and antisocial behaviour.
At Parkside, the council has replaced a disused office building with one and two-bedroom flats across two buildings.
Cllr John Harrison, cabinet member for Housing at North Tyneside Council, said: “These developments mean 16 more affordable homes for local people, giving them somewhere they can settle and build their lives.
“The mix of houses and flats will help us meet different housing needs, from people looking for a smaller home to families who need more space.”
He added: “Residents in Howdon and Wallsend have seen two neglected sites transformed and I thank our council teams, contractors and funding partners for helping us bring these developments to completion.”
North East Mayor Kim McGuinness, who provided over £390,000 to unlock the two sites, said: “Everyone deserves a safe, secure and genuinely affordable place to call home, and these 16 new council homes are another step towards that.
“I’m determined to build 15,000 more social and affordable homes across the North East, turning land that has stood empty and unused into good-quality flats, bungalows and houses that people can be proud to call home.”
Shahi Islam, director of Affordable Housing at Homes England, said: “As the Government’s housing and regeneration agency, increasing the supply of quality affordable homes remains one of our key objectives and we are committed to supporting ambitious housebuilders of all sizes to build those homes and communities.”
