Winter is a tough time at the kennels

The mornings are pretty nippy now, aren't they? A sign of things to come. Winter is not a time we look forward to in rescue. Shorter days mean less time to get all the rescues exercised.

The paddock doesn't get chance to dry out the same and the electric bill goes sky high with the amount of washing and drying we have to do as well as keeping the kennels nice and cosy for the dogs.

We've had a few adoptions which always cheers us up. Gracie, the rough-coated lurcher, went off to live with an amazing family. Gracie had so many applicants that we had to draw up a shortlist to visit her and it was Gracie's reaction to the family that sealed the deal. Truly a match made in heaven.

Another great match was Maple the whippet-cross pup, sometimes people and a dog just look right together, as if it's meant to be. Maple’s home was so ideal, I tried to get them to adopt me too!

Maddie, the fifth of the deserted toy poodles, was adopted. She has gone to live with another toy poodle so they know exactly what to expect of the breed and, from the photos we have seen, she looks as if she's made herself very at home.

An adoption we were really excited about was Frankie the pug. Frankie has some nerve issues with his spine and so his back legs have no coordination. Despite him receiving lots of applications, none of them were quite right until a lovely young couple came along. With the guy working from home, Frankie would have the company he craved and with their solemn promise to keep him slim, the deal was sealed.

We had two new arrivals – Bertie, the wire-haired dachshund, who is trying to get over the death of his owner, and Skylar, the dinky German shepherd, whose owner was struggling. Both dogs are settling in before we begin their assessments so keep an eye out for further news on them.

Rescue Dog of the Week: Ripley

Poor Ripley is having no luck at the moment. She may be partially-sighted but as she was born this way, it doesn't hold her back. She is a pug x American bulldog, so is just a little bigger than a pug but with the personality of a bully.

She has lots of energy, so will need lots of exercise. As long as she is getting outlets for her energy, she will settle. Ripley is just two years old and deserves to find her forever home. If you are interested in Ripley, please email [email protected]. Homecheck and adoption fee will apply.
