Family-run equestrian centre celebrates 50th anniversary

A popular family-run equestrian centre is celebrating it’s 50th anniversary

Murton Equestrian Centre is today in the the hands of the third generation of the Sharp family – a legacy that started in 1976 with the opening of Murton House Riding School, in North Tyneside, by Stan and Eve Sharp.

Fifty years on, the family’s passion for horses continues with a commitment to riding, education and the people whose lives have been shaped by their experiences with horses. Stan and Eve’s daughter, Leigh Belbin, continued the family’s equestrian journey with the support of her husband, Derek.

The next chapter belongs to granddaughter Charlotte Belbin, who aims to continuing the riding school’s traditional values while expanding the range of equestrian services available - including own-horse training and saddle fitting.

She said: “I aim to reflect the family’s commitment to evolving with the needs of today’s horse owners while preserving all the traditions and values established by Stan and Eve five decades ago.

"Our family’s journey reflects the enduring value of tradition, dedication and a shared passion for horses.” Over the years, Murton has welcomed generations of riders - from children taking their very first riding lessons to experienced equestrians developing their skills.

Charlotte added: “For many of our clients, the centre has become much more than a place to ride.

"It’s somewhere to build friendships, learn responsibility, develop confidence and create memories that last a lifetime. “Behind every riding lesson and every horse care activity is a tremendous amount of dedication.

"Running an equestrian centre requires hard work, knowledge, patience and a genuine love of horses, and we aim to continue those qualities which have been the family’s aim for five decades.”

Murton Equestrian Centre offers a range of riding lessons, horse care activities and equestrian learning opportunities for people of different ages and abilities.

Its work also extends into inclusive education and equine-assisted learning, helping participants develop confidence, communication, independence and practical life skills. The centre is a British Horse Society and a Riding for the Disabled Association approved centre – aiming to continuing to provide opportunities for people to experience the benefits of horses in a supportive environment. Charlotte added: “Our 50th anniversary is an opportunity to celebrate Stan and Eve’s original vision, Leigh and Derek’s contribution, and the work of many staff, volunteers, clients, horses and ponies who have been part of Murton’s story.” “Our story is still being written – honouring its heritage, supporting the equestrian community and inspiring the next generation of horse lovers.”
