Stage is set for theatre club glory in national awards

An amateur dramatics group is once again looking forward to a place in the national spotlight after being nominated for a top award.

Alnwick Theatre Club is in the running for a prestigious National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA) award for its production of Chris Chibnall’s play Kiss Me Like You Mean It.

The club previously won two awards for its performance of Brassed Off in 2015.

The latest nomination comes after a review by NODA lauded all aspects of the “professional” and “superb” staging of the Chibnall play, including the outstanding and memorable performances of all four actors – Harry Brierley, Molly Reading, Carol Lawrence and Oliver Pusey.

Director Ben Kinloch came in for particular praise for his mature insight and innovative approach on his directorial debut.

Club chairman Carol Lawrence said: “We are absolutely thrilled with the nomination for Kiss Me Like You Mean It and pleased that it is for the play as a whole as everyone, both cast and crew, worked hard to bring this unfamiliar, but thought-provoking play to fruition.

“We would like to thank everyone who contributed in any way to this production, and we are indebted to Ben for choosing to bring this bold, contemporary piece of theatre to Alnwick Theatre Club and the Playhouse.”

The winner will be announced at a ceremony next month.

Meanwhile, the club’s next production, Goodnight Mr Tom, will take to the Alnwick Playhouse stage next week, running from Wednesday to Saturday.

The story follows young William Beech, who is evacuated from a life of squalor in London to the idyllic English countryside during World War II, where he finds friendship with recluse Tom Oakley.

Tickets cost £10 to £11 adult, £9 concs, £6 child on 01665 510785.

Rehearsals for the January pantomime Beauty and the Beast begin in September.
