A play about world cycling champion Beryl Burton starring Shameless actress Rebecca Ryan will be stopping off at Amble this week.
The performance is the first show to come to Amble Parish Hall as part of the Highlights Rural Touring Scheme, and there are only a few tickets left.
The play, titled Beryl, tells the story of the five-times world pursuit champion, 13-times national champion, twice road-racing world champion and 12-times national champion.
Her life is retold in a production following the Leeds-born athlete’s progress from humble beginnings on a rhubarb farm to becoming the best British cycling all-rounder for 25 consecutive years. The 2014 play was written by fellow Shameless actress Maxine Peake.
The freewheeling production features Coronation Street actress Samantha Power in the title role, with Ryan, best known as Debbie Gallagher in Shameless, playing a series of characters, both male and female, including the young Beryl and her daughter Denise.
Parish hall promoter Mike Dixon said: “We are really delighted to have been chosen to host this play. West Yorkshire Playhouse are a top-rate company and we are honoured that they will be performing here.”
The show is on in Amble tomorrow at 7.30pm. To book tickets, priced £5, go to www.highlightsnorth.co.uk or call 01665 712324.
The play is also on at Bardon Mill and Henshaw Village Hall on Saturday. Call 01434 344424 for further details.
