Wind ensemble in concert

An afternoon of the musical kind is in store for visitors to Alnwick's Bailiffgate Museum on Sunday, March 4.

Visitors have the chance to listen to the Alnwick Symphonic Wind Ensemble, which is an offshoot of the highly regarded Alnwick Playhouse Concert Band.

Founded and directed by Ray Thompson (who is also the director of Playhouse Band) in 2012, it was formed to rehearse and perform mostly classical works written or arranged for symphonic winds.

The ensemble will be playing from a selection of works by Mozart, Gounod, Elgar and Dvorak, etc.

Volunteer Jane Mann said: “This is the first time the Alnwick Symphonic Wind Ensemble have played at the museum and we are delighted to welcome them.

“We hope lots of people will be keen to enjoy some classical music in our lovely building on a quiet Sunday. It is an inspiring and relaxing way to wind down at the weekend before work on Monday.”

Ray Thompson, director, said: “The ensemble is made up of about 17 members of Alnwick Playhouse Community Band, who are all keen amateur or semi-professional players who play to a high standard.
