Concert season closes on a high

ALWINTON Church’s summer concert season draws to a close with the Northern Sinfonia Chorus.

The concert includes the first performance of a new work, The Knight’s Stone, for choir and flute, composed especially for the occasion by John Casken.

Choral pieces include Tallis’s and Messiaen’s settings of O Sacrum Convivium, motets by Grieg and Nielsen, and folk song arrangements by Holst, Whittaker and Grainger, interspersed with pieces for solo flute played by the young virtuoso Gavin Osborn. He will play Baroque Flute, and the very rare bass flute, as well as normal concert flute in works by Marin Marais, Debussy, Takemitsu, Murail, and Richard Rodney Bennett.
