Concert proves fitting tribute

REVIEW: Alnwick Music Society, The Duchess Elizabeth Memorial Concert, performance by pianist Martin Roscoe, Thursday, April 18, Alnwick Castle Guest Hall.

This concert was in honoured memory of our president of many years, the Duchess Elizabeth. It was a concert she would have really enjoyed.

The occasion was graced by the presence of the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland, by Lady Victoria and a large audience.

Martin Roscoe played for us a wonderful programme of a Haydn sonata (Hob XVI/32), Beethoven’s exhilarating ‘Waldstein’ sonata (opus 53), and Schubert’s heavenly last sonata (D960); also included was music from Martin Roscoe’s latest recording project, the solo piano works of Erno Dohnanyi (two CDs so far issued by Hyperion), of which the Rhapsody in C, opus 11 no.3 is a piece music lovers will do well to follow up.

Mr Roscoe provided informative introductions to the music in his own warm inimitable style.

His playing was superlative in every way. One innovation for this concert was that our very fine Steinway concert grand piano was raised up on a modest stage, enabling better sight of the performer and improvement to the sound.

Once again we are grateful to the Guest Hall for excellent coffee in the interval.
