Concert educated, intrigued and inspired

Waverley Harp Trio at Alnwick Playhouse, hosted by Alnwick Music Society.

It was a pleasure to receive a concert from this Scottish group, consisting of Lis Dooner (flute), Steve Tees (viola) and Helen McLeod (harp).

Well known to audiences over the border, their programme consisted of French music (Ibert and Debussy), Scottish music (Maxwell Davies, McGuire and Oswald) and an English Baroque composer (Croft).

If, occasionally, the balance between the three instruments pushed the viola into the background, we were impressed by the musicianship they showed, and entertained by their helpful and witty introductions.

In addition we were educated, sometimes intrigued, and often inspired by these works for an unusual combination of instruments.

The next Alnwick Music Society Concert will take place at Alnwick Playhouse on Thursday, May 3.

It will feature BBC Young Musician Winner 2012 Laura Van Der Heijden on cello and pianist Piotr Liminov.

They will perform with Brahms glorious Cello Sonata no.1, Prokofiev’s Cello Sonata and pieces by Beethoven and Janacek.

Tickets for the concert are £16, £15 concessions.

Students in full-time education are free.
