Alex and all that jazz

The Alex Yellowlees Band, Alnwick Playhouse, Tuesday, August 23, 7.30pm. Tickets £14, £13 conc.

MUSIC-LOVERS in north Northumberland will welcome the Alex Yellowlees Band back to the Playhouse.

The Scottish quartet’s violinist plays a style of jazz reminiscent of the late Stephane Grapelli, who formed one of the first all-string jazz groups with guitarist Django Reinhardt in France in 1934.

Grapelli has been a huge influence on Alex Yellowlees’ playing and interest in jazz since his father took him as a 12-year-old boy to see the legend perform.

Indeed the violinist, who performs his ‘hot club’ style music across Europe, has been hailed as the ‘Scottish Grapelli’, for playing in the same intoxicating swing style and with a similar level of inventiveness.

In his quartet, Alex is ably backed up by guitarist Ged Brockie, Mike Nisbet on acoustic guitar and Kenny Ellis on the double bass.
