He may have performed and sold out in illustrious theatres like the London Palladium, but controversial comedian Roy Chubby Brown admits he can’t wait to appear at Alnwick Playhouse next month.
The outrageous funnyman, known for his no-holds-barred material, will be supplying the laughs during a double header of his Don’t Get Fit! Get Fat! tour at the town venue.
His pending appearance has gone down well, with an extra show being staged on Sunday, April 12, after the initial April 11, gig sold out.
And while he has appeared in front of thousands of people in some of the most renowned venues, he says he relishes telling jokes in smaller auditoriums, like at the Playhouse.
He said: “I am looking forward to Alnwick. I love the more intimate venues, because you can see people’s faces. It is far better to tell a joke to someone when they are two feet away than when they are 300 feet away.”
The controversial nature of his act means Brown rarely appears on major television channels. But he is uncompromising in his comedy approach.
He said: “People might call me sexist, feminist or politically incorrect, but they are just jokes and an escape from reality. If people don’t like my jokes, then they know where the door is.” But there are certain gags that are off-limits. He said: “I know 1,000s of dirty kid jokes, but that’s not me. My humour is about everyday working life.”
Chubby may be 70, but his attitude to his profession is unyielding.
He said: “I work every day on my act. I did a gig on Saturday night and I was writing material for it on the Saturday afternoon. I love working.”
Roy Chubby Brown is at Alnwick Playhouse on Saturday, April 11, and Sunday, April 12, at 7.30pm. The Saturday show is sold out. Premier £23.50, standard £22.50. Call 01665 510785.
