An all-woman choir is getting Christmas off to a harmonious start in Warkworth.
Werca’s Folk, the highly-rated choir led by professional musician Sandra Kerr, will entertain an audience at the village’s Memorial Hall on Friday.
As well as traditional carols, the four-part harmony choir will dip deep into its repertoire of Northumbrian folk compositions.
“We’re really looking forward to singing in Warkworth again,” said Sandra.
“There’s always a welcoming crowd who are totally up for singing along with us!”
Tickets for the performance, which begins at 7.30pm, cost £6 (£5 concession), and are available now at Warkworth Village Store or from Marion Giles on 01665 711602.
Sandra, who was the voice of rag doll Madeleine Remnant in the successful BBC children’s TV series Bagpuss and who co-wrote the show’s music, was recently awarded a gold badge by the English Folk Dance and Song Society for ‘unique and outstanding contribution to the art of folk song’.
The award will be formally presented to Sandra in the King’s Hall at Newcastle University on March,6, 2015, at a concert featuring Werca’s Folk, Sisters Unlimited and Nancy Kerr and James Fagan.
And to celebrate the choir’s twentieth birthday next year, a weekend of activities in Warkworth is being planned for September 18 to 20, including a singing supper, singing walks, song workshops and a concert in St Lawrence’s Church, Warkworth.
