A Norweigan dance group will be taking up residency in Shilbottle and working with dance groups in the area next week.
Norway’s Panta Rei Danseteater is coming to Alnwick on Monday and will be travelling the rural roads of Alnwick, Alnmouth, Warkworth and Shilbottle.
Members will be spending the week working with schools and dance groups in the lead up to their performance of I Wish Her Well at Shilbottle Community Hall, on Friday, March 10.
Oslo-based, Panta Rei is one of Norway’s premier dance companies, known for its fast-paced colourful dance theatre.
In the lead-up to the show, the company will be in residence for a week of workshops with Year 3 and 4 pupils from Warkworth and Shilbottle primary schools.
Members will also be working with Dansformation, an independent dance group of seven to 14-year-olds, based at Hindmarsh Hall in Alnmouth, and The Dancing Girls, a group of over-60s, who meet weekly at the Alnwick Playhouse.
The youth dance and school groups will be working towards a curtain-raiser performance to open Panta Rei’s show.
Emma Hardman, from Howick, a professional dancer and leader of Dansformation youth dance group, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for young people to work alongside international performers to learn new dance ideas and gain experience performing to a supportive local audience.
“This experience will excite and challenge our aspiring local dancers and we have three days to learn a new dance and impress our Alnwick audience – and this visiting company”.
The company is touring with Highlights Rural Touring scheme with the aim of bringing more dance opportunities to support Alnwick’s active dance scene. Panta Rei’s visit is part of a national Rural Touring Dance Initiative to bring top quality dance out of main theatres and into rural communities.
Gill Bray, who is the promoter at Shilbottle Community Hall, said: “Since autumn 2015 we have partnered Highlights Rural Touring Scheme to bring shows for children and young families to Shilbottle.
“This will be our first dance performance and by working with local schools and youth dance groups we hope to bring new audiences to our active venue in Shilbottle and offer the opportunity to people in the locality to access a quality show on their doorstep.”
Panta Rei will conclude its residency with a performance of I Wish Her Well on Friday, March 10, at 7.30pm.
I Wish Her Well is an intricate performance, combining storytelling, high tempo energy and an evocative sound score by British composer Nathaniel Reed with melody and atmosphere. Book tickets on 01665 575196 or www.highlightsnorth.co.uk
