An artist who savours being in the outdoors

A new selection of work from a Northumbrian landscape painter goes on show at a north Northumberland gallery from today.

The Old School Gallery in Alnmouth is welcoming back artist Ken Spencer for a summer exhibition, which runs until Sunday, July 5.

Gallery owner Dale Maloney said: “Ken Spencer’s work is much admired by those who know and love Northumberland.

“Originally from Merseyside and now living in Alnwick, Ken’s approach to painting portrays the light and tranquillity of the local landscape with a subtlety and skill with a style that is recognisably his own.”

“Often Ken chooses subjects that are familiar to walkers who have ventured across our expansive county to encounter the most exhilarating and breathtaking views.

“Ken paints at home in his studio, but uses photography as a means to study the landscape.

“The Cheviots, College Valley and the River Aln often feature, but from the perspective of one who knows and savours being out in the countryside.

“Ken has also depicted some of our most treasured coastline, including Alnmouth and Embleton, often with a few figures that may populate the beaches.

“Ken’s technique brings a light and depth to his painting that has become a characteristic of his work that many art-lovers enjoy.”

Keeping up the local theme, it comes hot on the heels of Sheila Dodd’s Changing Light exhibition, which featured her bold and dramatic paintings of the Northumberland coast.

Dale added: “This new exhibition will feature a range of new work with small and large pieces available to buy.

“The gallery also has a coffee shop and gifts, along with work by other local artists and printmakers.”

The Old School Gallery is open Wednesday to Sunday, between 10am and 5pm.
