Following previous successful performances in Felton, Embleton and Warkworth, a fourth venue, Rothbury, has been added to the tour, enabling a wider audience to enjoy this year’s production.

The play, set in a home for retired actresses, features Coward’s hallmark witty dialogue and a little light music.

However, there are also moments of pathos as the ladies face up to the problems of ageing and all that it entails.

Inevitably, there are strong characters who do not always see eye to eye, and their relationships provide humour as they strive to maintain their independence and individuality in a situation that requires them to live co-operatively.

In a break from traditional staging, this year’s production will be performed on the floor of the halls, with audiences either raised or surrounding the actors.

This was partly necessitated by the larger cast and setting, but also to bring life at The Wings closer to the audience.

In another change for the Company, this year’s cast includes men who visit in various roles, highlighting the different concerns of the residents and bringing their own warmth to the home.

‘Waiting in The Wings’ will be performed at Felton Village Hall on July 10, Creighton Hall, Embleton on July 11, Warkworth Memorial Hall on July 12 and The Jubilee Hall, Rothbury on July 13. All performances start at 7.30p.m.

Tickets cost £10, which includes a programme, are available from: Gallery 45, Felton; Embleton Post Office; Warkworth Post Office and Tully’s, Rothbury.
