14 pictures of Alnwick's historic Shrovetide football match in past years to help make up for 2021 cancellation
The Shrovetide football match, played in Alnwick since at least 1762, has had to be cancelled due to the Covid pandemic – but there’s no need to miss out.
In 2012, the Gallery Youth Project and Bailiffgate Museum & Gallery made a film ‘Lads and Lasses of Alnwick’ celebrating the game, the people and the traditions: the Football Committee, the Duke of Northumberland, the players, the Black Bullets, the whisky and the prizes.
It’s free to view on Bailiffgate Museum’s YouTube channel, so this year you can relax with a stack of pancakes for an intriguing insight into the people who work to make this historic game possible and find out who scored the Hales and won the match ball nine years ago.
And take a look at these 14 pictures from the Shrovetide match over the years.
