Eglingham Junior Tennis

The Eglingham Tennis Club, formed last year, held a junior coaching course last week at the old school field in the village.

Children aged 13 and under took part in the event, which was led by Ian Purvis, winner of the club’s first Senior Tennis Tournament last summer. A morning’s coaching last Tuesday was followed by a competition two days later with a total of nine children taking part.

The competition winner was 12-year-old Gordon Rae, while the winner of the Plate event, for those beaten in the first round, was Joe Finn, seven, who was spending part of his Easter holiday with his family in a holiday cottage next to the playing field.

The event was a great success and all the participants received special certificates to mark the occasion. It is now hoped to stage further junior tennis events during the next half-term holiday.

A Tennis Ladder has been set up for senior players. It will run during the next two months. The club’s Senior Tournament is scheduled for shortly after Wimbledon fortnight.

Thanks to a generous bequest, the club will shortly be able to make improvements to the sports facilities on the field, making it an increasingly valuable community facility.
