Coquet Yacht Club is riding on the crest of a wave after scoring two grants which will help take it to the next level and increase opportunities in the sport.
The Amble-based organisation has received £10,000 of Sport England funding, allowing it to purchase two family training Laser Bahia vessels.
It has also secured £850 from the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) for training and dinghy instructors.
Peter Coulthard, the club’s rear commodore of sailing, said: “This funding means that we can run RYA-accredited training courses for club members and encourage families who are new to sailing to be able to sail without having to purchase a boat.
“We will be starting the courses in May, along with taster sessions.
“This has allowed us to formalise what the club is about; generating interest and developing peoples’ abilities and skills.”
The club’s membership has increased by 50 per cent in the last 18 months and Peter hopes more people will come on board.
A longer-term aim is to increase the training fleet to include yachts to offer off-shore qualifications.
