The Alwinton Show, the last local shepherds show of the season held on October 10, will provide a final opportunity for local wrestlers to compete in Cumberland and Westmorland Wrestling tournament.

World Champion wrestlers from Northumberland such as Robert Leiper (All Weights Champion pictures) and Harry Bertram (Under 15 / 8 stone Champion) are expected to compete against strong Northumbrian, Cumbrian and Scottish representation.

Locals Freya Waddington and Lucy Singer provide an annual hard fought thrilling duel in the ladies competition. Not only will experienced wrestlers compete, even six year-olds will be competing in the under-10 category.

Novices too take part with some first time wrestlers from the audience getting a quick lesson in the rules and safety from the experienced wrestlers.

Rothbury Wrestling Academy Coach Darren Whitfield said: “Its been a fantastic year of wrestling for Rothbury Wrestling Academy, young and old wrestlers have had successes in international competitions in Brittany, and at our local events.

“Alwinton always provides great entertainment for a huge crowd, with wrestlers at their peak of competitiveness. Having wrestled against each other all season wrestlers have to use their weight, speed, technique and wit to win each bout.

“The crowd often get behind the smaller wrestler but what makes the sport exciting is its not always the biggest who wins!”

The Alwinton Show is held on Saturday 10th October - full details of individual events and timings, including how to enter the Dog Show and Fell Race can be found on www.alwintonshow.co.uk
