Winning run extended

Warkworth (164 all out) v Berwick (113 all out)

SG Wealth Management Northumberland Cricket League, Premier Division

Warkworth exploited Berwick’s vulnerability with the bat to win Saturday’s north Northumberland derby by 51 runs.

The second-placed Castle Field side, who extended their unbeaten start to their Northumberland Cricket League Premier Division campaign, were put into bat by Berwick, on what was a damp and slow wicket which offered little in the way of bounce or venom – following morning rain.

For a time, it looked as though the decision may have backfired as Warkworth surpassed the 150 mark with the loss of just three wickets.

But Berwick’s skipper Scott Middlemist brought himself on and changed the complexion of the innings, eventually finishing with 4-24 from 13 overs, as Warkworth stuttered to 164 all out.

The captain was supported by Sean Wales (2-30), Steven Emery (2-27), Callum Urwin (1-22) and Martyn Elliott (1-49).

Warkworth’s Chris Younger top-scored with 43 and Adam Hall hit 33, while Berwick gave away 45 runs in extras, but a lower-order slump halted the hosts’ progress.

But the Castle Field side hit back with the ball, taking two wickets in the first over, leaving Berwick in all sorts of trouble at 3-2.

Despite knocks of 21 from Urwin and 34 from Elliott, the Pier Field outfit never really recovered from that quick-fire blow and were eventually dismissed for 113.

Martin Clark was Warkworth’s leading hitman with the ball, ending with figures of 4-32 from 10 overs.

Younger (3-19) and William Pringe (1-13) also struck for the hosts as the Castle Field side continued their great start to the season.
