SUNDAY’S North East Harrier League competition took place on Newcastle’s Town Moor in atrocious weather. Hours of continual rain turned the cross country course into a testing quagmire.
First home for Alnwick Harriers was Graham Syers in 44:33 who raced alongside team-mate Mark Miller (second) in a cat and mouse chase throughout the run, third home was Jim Lillico who completed the distance in a time of 45:28 and in fourth position was Mike Telfer in 47:24, David Hindmarsh running for Alnwick for his first time came fifth for the club picking up points in 47:47 and Richard Agan from the medium pack came sixth in 47:52.
Graham Skirrow and John Cockburn completed the distance in 52:07 and 60:13 respectively.
First home in the ladies’ race over two laps was Tracy Sample running from the medium pack in a time of 36:55 followed by Lesley Miller in 37:55 both with a two minute handicap and third home was Lisa Sutton from the fast pack with a four minute handicap in 39:40.
Competing at the lower end of his race category, 14-year-old Alnwick Harrier Daniel Leng defied the challenging conditions and had a fantastic race, running with the U15s’ leading pack from the beginning and ending third to take a well-deserved bronze medal. And running with a 1m 40s handicap in the U13 race, Alnwick’s 12-year-old Peter Skirrow posted the fourth fastest U13 time of the day to finish seventh.
Alnwick Harriers’ next cross country competition is on Saturday, February 26, at Wrekenton.
